No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A 52-year-old worker, Mohammad Rustam Ali, died on Tuesday morning after getting trapped in a running machine at Hukumchand Jute Mill in Halisahar, North 24 Parganas. The incident occurred during routine operations when his body came into contact with the moving machinery. According to workers present at the site, the machine stopped automatically after the incident, but by then he had suffered fatal injuries.
Fellow workers, alerted by the noise, rushed to the spot and managed to pull Rustam Ali out. He was immediately taken to Kalyani ESI Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police were informed, and the body was sent for post-mortem examination. The incident was also reported to the local police station for further investigation.
Rustam Ali was a resident of Halisahar and had been working in the jute mill for several years. He was the sole earning member of his family. His death has left his family in distress. Co-workers stated that the mill has seen repeated complaints regarding safety conditions, and that adequate protective measures during machine operations were lacking.
The incident led to unrest within the mill premises. Workers alleged negligence by the mill authorities and claimed that safety protocols were not being implemented. As of Tuesday evening, the mill administration had not released any official statement regarding the accident. Police have begun a formal inquiry into the matter.
